Accompanist Workshop

Objective:

This workshop is designed for trained pianists to learn the fundamentals of accompanying a ballet class. Musicians will participate in classes taught by full time accompanist for Alberta Ballet School and Company Marina Federov. Musicians will also observe Ms. Federov accompany ABS ballet instructor Taryn Klassen in both junior and senior level ballet classes.

Musician’s will learn music styles and forms and how these best connect with various dance movements. They will understand the difference in playing as a concert pianist when you are the solo act. A ballet accompanist plays in coordination with the teacher and dancers to best compliment the dancer and bring out their best expression. The workshop will help musicians understand the ballet routines and exercise composition and what genres of music are best suited for these exercises.

Medicine Hat Conservatory

The Conservatory is housed in the Cultural Centre owned by Medicine Hat College.

  • 9:00 – 9:30am: Musician session with Marina Federov
  • 9:30 – 10:45am: Observe Junior Ballet Class
  • 11:00am – 12:00pm: Musician session with Marina Federov
  • 12:00 – 1:00pm: Lunch Break
  • 1:00 – 3:00pm: Observe Senior Ballet and Pointe Class
  • 3:15 – 4:15pm: Musician session with Marina Federov

Outcomes:

Upon completion of this workshop musicians will gain experience and confidence to accompany ballet classes in addition to gaining a strong understanding of the fundamental movements of ballet and how music selection can enhance these movements. Musicians can seek out employment opportunities to accompany unset ballet classes at local dance schools as well opportunities to accompany syllabus classes for ballet examinations.  

Biography of Marina Federov:

Marina Federov was born and raised in the Ukraine and studied music for 8 years. She graduated with 100% honours in all music subjects. After graduation she continued her music education and graduated from the Academic Music College of the Moscow State Conservatory of P.I. Tchaikovsky. Ms. Federov competed in many music competitions for young composers and received first and second place awards for her compositions.  Ms. Federov taught piano and accompanied for choir and other performances in Israel for several years before moving to Canada. She has continued to teach piano in Canada and has played as a full time accompanist for Alberta Ballet School for over 15 years. Ms. Federov accompanies the School's Professional Division and Recreational ballet classes as well as accompanying for Alberta Ballet Company. She accompanies ballet examination and continues to perform.
